A steer in our yard?

Ring. Ring. Ring went the telephone. It was the neighbor girl calling.

"There's a cow out! It's running down by your spring and headed towards your barn. I don't know whose it is, but it's not in a fence."

Excitement! By the time I got off the phone the cow was past our barn and headed towards our house. It was on the bank just outside our back door. I told Zach to get the four-wheeler, meanwhile I phoned my husband. Bad idea on my part to tell our son to drive the ATV. "That would just stir the steer up," was my husband's response.

The four-wheeler went back into the garage and the children watched the black steer cross the road to meet his buddies behind the fence while I phoned another neighbor. This is no small thing because we live along a busy highway and the last thing we needed was for some vehicle to hit a steer and we had some concerns even though we didn't own the mammal.

The neighbor got in touch with the farmer. And we soon saw 2 men on with the chase. The steer crossed the road down past our house causing a tractor trailer to stop.

And it crossed the road for the 3rd time! We soon saw the gate being closed and we assumed the steer was now safely in the pasture with the others.

It was an exciting morning before the school hour!

Saturday was a lovely family day, planting the garden! We planted lettuce, onions, radishes, red beets, carrots, and red potatoes. We planted the rest of the potatoes tonight.

And we are very excited about using our Compost Tumbler. We had bought it over Ebay several years ago and really didn't use it much. I think we'll combine the compost idea using the tumbler and making one out of blocks. We didn't have a garden for several years so we are all super excited about the project!

We'll see how pumped we still are when all the weeds emerge. But I planted flowers at the edge and am laying  a stone wall so in order for the flowers to look at their best, all weeds have got to go. That's why we plan on mulching and using compost.
