Packing a lunch/dawdling

It's quite one thing to get up and pack your husband's lunch. For some reason, it's not a favorite job of mine. I don't mind the task when I've got something handy around. The usual is a sandwich, fruit and/or yogurt, salty like chips, crackers, or pretzels, and a sweet like cookies, pie, or lately, homemade granola bars.
Yet I am VERY thankful that I am blessed with a faithful Christian husband who is alive and healthy. So I can't complain about the lunch packing. I really don't mind it. We get to spend those precious few minutes together every morning.
But it certainly was a surprise to cut a slice of bread and find this. Now I didn't move those little pieces. That's how they fell. And you surely don't use this for a man-sized sandwich!

Then followed another surprise. The second slice of bread followed the same pattern, but didn't fall apart like the first slice.

Hmmm. I really don't know who did the bread slicing, but I do know that I am blessed with a boy who will cook his own egg in the nest when he is hungry for it and his mom doesn't do the job. Actually, most times he'll shoo me out of the kitchen because it's something he enjoys doing.

I also know that his brother likes the 'circle' over the egg. So his siblings will cut the bread like the above pattern and fry them in butter so he gets to eat 'toast' made on the skillet instead of in the toaster. Serve it with syrup and he's a happy boy.

I will explain how to fix egg in the nest:

Butter a slice of bread on one side.
Cut a circle in the center of the bread. A round biscuit or cookie cutter works great!
Use a small amount of butter for the skillet and heat the pan.
Place the unbuttered side of bread in pan.
Now crack an egg in the center.
Be sure to add the circle to the pan.
Brown. Flip egg in the nest and brown the other side.
Serve with pancake syrup or just plain salt and butter.

My husband prefers the latter.

I also happen to know of a boy who really couldn't concentrate on school work today, so he snuck away and helped his brothers create shapes with play dough. Does the above photo give any inkling of the culprit? *wink* He had fun earlier in the day making a bead necklace. I then sent him out to play and weed eat. So he went to the woods and worked on a project that he'd been thinking about for some time. It was a project that involved weed eating. I thought he was going to work around the house! *smile
One of these days, I'll have to take a walk to the top of the hill and see what he accomplished. I also need to check the perennials that I planted a couple days ago. The daylilies, hostas, and lily turf were a gift from the neighbor and make a wonderful addition to our campfire.

Indeed we are grateful for the talents of our oldest son and the enthusiasm he puts into work.

Yet I will add that we had some funky stuff going on this week. Instead of drying the dishes night before last, he was upstairs 'styling' his youngest brother's hair! Of all things, like a girl.

These are some fun and hilarious moments we will never forget. Kinda hard to discipline a boy when we're all laughing. Plus the job got done, in his own good time. So why complain?

He helped his tired sister finish the job while the oldest folded laundry and mom and dad, well, we had some office work to finish. Such is the crazy life of this home! But I wouldn't trade it for the world. I love them dearly and stuff like this makes work a little lighter. Hey, why not laugh and have a good time when you're getting the chores done?

Your son sounds like mine...so MUCH!! He loves to cook his OWN food and chores get done in HIS time!! :) But to force MY time table on him, would make the job dreadful and not as fun!
Cheers to boys who will become influential men of the future!! :)

I love this post! I'm the same with lunch. I want to provide him a lunch rather than him buying fast food or going hungry. I'm NOT a huge fan of doing it though, but you're right, at least we have healthy husbands to make lunch FOR. And we LOVE the egg in a nest too, but we grew up calling them "Bullets" because of the hole through the middle of the bread...that's what my dad called them. And my favorite part is the buttered center too! Hey, I've been burned out on breakfast lately, that will be a nice change tomorrow morning!
