This looks like an easy way to dig potatoes comparing to digging them by hand like we used to. But for a commercial farmer, this way would be very slow.
Most of the help here is volunteer and it's a very neat way for the community to get together and have a good time. And for older folks, it's a great way for reminiscing.
The men saw all these little boys and invited them to help pick up potatoes.
They had a great time getting their hands dirty! Landon does get upset when he can't keep up with his older brothers. In time, he'll get over it. Now that the potatoes are all in a neat row, it's time to put them on the sled.
We needed potatoes and so we bought a sack of these freshly dug ones. We made some homemade french fries when we got home. They were a treat!!! I could really taste the difference between these potatoes and the store bought ones. I really miss a garden and am determined to get a plot ready for next year's planting, Lord willing.
All that hard work gives reason for a time out. It made me think about slaves and hard they had to work. Many times they never got a break. They were treated cruelly.
Time to gather hay. They gathered it with pitch forks and carried the stack on two long poles.
Next, they took the poles out and stacked it around a post to keep it from being scattered. When we watched the Christy movie next day, that is one thing we noticed - a stack of hay around a post. Interesting.
There's nothing like an old car and an antique couple to go with it.
When are you an antique? When you're 25-30 or you're getting grey hair?
In this part of the country, there's lots of moutain music. What better way for folks to get together and dance or just sit and listen to bluegrass!
This granny was our favorite!
We read about spinning in The Witch of Blackbird Pond for Zach and Allison's read alouds. The book isn't as radical as it sounds. The best part for me was that we don't judge a person without getting to know them.
This grandpa was proud to be showing me his machine he made. He told me about 1 and 3 then 2 and 4. I'm sorry I didn't understand half of what he said and I can't think what you call this loom. I only listened and that was good enough for him.
This photo should have been included before the apple butter, because this is the apple press.
We still have some canning to finish. We canned 35 quarts of pears today. We picked them 1 1-2 weeks ago so it takes a bit of time for this kind to ripen. Merv picked pears today while I gathered and sorted the drops.
We bought 4 boxes of grapes that will go into juice tomorrow.
Braden is doing wonderful. It truly is an answer to prayer. We thank everyone of you for your prayers. Both lumps continue to recede and the rash on his head is getting smaller and drying up. We give God all the glory and praise because He is the Physician.
