A lump of clay in the potter's hand

We had an awesome time on Saturday at the Old Timey Days.
The first thing booth we visited was this potter who said she was a lefty. Her wheel spins opposite of right handers. First, she took this lump of clay and patted it instead of squeezing it so that air pockets don't form.

Then she placed it on the wheel, and began to form, using water when needed.

In a few minutes, she had this mug formed. Then it needed to set before she could add the handle.

The handle was leathery when she pinched it onto the mug.

And here is the finished vessel - a coffee mug.

Posting this reminds me of a devotional we heard at church a few weeks back.

Jeremiah 18:1-6

  • verse 3 - Then I went down to the potter's house, and behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

  • verse 4 - And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it  again another vesel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

  • verse 6 - O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

We are a lump of clay in the Master Potter's hand.
When we yield to God's plan, He can make us a beautiful vessel.
When we don't yield, we mess up God's plan for us to be a beautiful vessel.
When we rebel, God can form us as a vessel of destruction.
But we have a good and merciful God who will graft a person back in when he repents. Romans 11:22-24
