The vastness of numbers

Once again, the semester started for music lessons. Last week Merv took the girls. It is good to be back into that and this time we go in the morning instead of the evening. Teacher was pleased with the girls. She could tell they practiced during the summer.

Amber is driving and is doing a great job. We've got this older car for her, so when we all go to lessons, she doesn't get to drive. Hopefully, she can rack up her hours really fast. Funny, it seems you never want your children to be driving but it's amazing how you're ready for each step in their life!

***** ***** ***** ***** *****

It's the most wonderful time of the day when we sit together and read stories! For us, that can be anytime of the day: morning, afternoon, evening, or night.

Tonight we read Is A Blue Whale The Biggest Thing There Is? by Robert E. Wells. It's a great book and was included with our kindergarten stuff in Sonlight Core K. As is the case with a lot of people, we didn't take time to read all our books. So we squeeze them in to read whenever we can.

I was amazed at the facts in the 1st page! The whole idea is to get your little ones thinking how very BIG numbers really are.

It takes about a minute to count to ONE HUNDRED, counting at normal speed. Yeah, I tried it.

Keep on counting, and you'll reach a THOUSAND in about 12 minutes.

If you decide to go on counting to a MILLION, don't plan on doing anything else for awhile. Counting for a steady 10 hours a day, it will take you 3 weeks.

If you are REALLY ambitious and would like to count to a BILLION, you'd better make that your career. Counting 12 hours a day, it will take you more than 50 years!!!

That blew me away!

And to think that our national debt is over 13 TRILLION! If you go on the National Debt Clock website, the numbers keep going higher as you sit there and watch.

And here's some facts from Jay Steele. I don't know him but I give him credit for these facts:
"One trillion is 1 followed by twelve zeros.

1,000,000,000,000

That is one million TIMES one million. That still doesn't do it too well for me. I can understand what one million is but still really can't appreciate it. Let's look at some other ways to look at one trillion in terms other than dollars.

If you had a string that was one trillion inches long, it would be able to wrap around the Earth 635 times at the equator. If you want to head into space, a one trillion inch piece of string would go to the moon and back thirty-three times.

How about one trillion seconds? If you go back in time one trillion seconds, that would be 31,710 years ago. OK, now I am getting some perspective.

Let's break one trillion dollars down to some values I can appreciate. And you can go to this link to read more."

This article did start by counting to one hundred with little ones.
But these numbers are astronomical!

Even GREATER than that, is our wonderful God who created the earth and space! Read the above book to appreciate our Lord even more. The trillion dollar debt is nothing compared to the vastness of stars and space.
Who can study astronomy and not acknowlege and serve God? He is a fool.

Thinking of the strength in numbers reminds me of Christians. How many in the world are claiming only the lip service of the Christian life but never live it? There are far too many.

Too many times we as selfish human people let our petty differences keep us from banding together in the strength of numbers to work together in God's kingdom!

If Christ is THE NUMBER ONE thing in your life, you won't have too much trouble loving your brother and sister in church. In fact, you won't have any trouble loving the person you hate the most. I know, because I've been there.

It is wonderful to know that there is not one person in this world who I hate. Only Christ has given me that kind of love and I want to tell you, it's the most freedom I've ever experienced! That would be awesome if you would get to know Jesus like that!

Imagine banding together, BILLIONS of us and following the loving God of the Bible!
