We do not have a garden so we are using flower beds and trying to get the soil good and ready for next year. Grass clippings, garbage, and leaves get added regularly to the tomato plants. So we decided to plant lettuce in this metal kettle. It worked out very well because the lettuce did not get terribly dirty like it would have in the garden because we used potting soil. I'll be planting more tomorrow and maybe we can have fresh cut lettuce all summer.

Annabelle Hydrangea
This is a favorite of mine. The blooms are huge, over 10" in diameter. You can learn more here about this beautiful bush and how to take care of it. Hydrangeas love the morning sun.

We've got lots of hills to mow and weed eat.

In this day and age, the little ones grab what shoes they can find. You'd think the boots would be sweltering hot on a summer day. But the crocs I bought for the boys create blisters on their feet and they HATE to wear them. Every last one of them. One year I bought Sketchers thinking that a more expensive kind would wear better. Guess again and what a waste of money. Blisters, blisters. So this year I bought cheapies from WalMart and again they got blisters. So far I am convinced that crocs are the wrong kind of shoes to buy for my boys. Unless I haven't bought the right brand. To me it would make a whole lot more sense to buy crocs and rinse the sandy dirt off when dirty rather than having shoes and boots to clean. And having said boots reminds me that the 2 youngest were wearing rain boots this summer because they liked them better than crocs. So I just let them grab the pair of shoes or boots they like. Forget the crocs, at least for this year.

Yes, that is poison growing over this old barn that needs to be torn down. I would love to do something with the old boards, but my husband says they're too old. He did get a second opinion to support his idea of the wood being too weathered to create something else.

This would be lovely for a flower bed or for planting 3 gorgeous flowering bushes. But for now we will be using it for a little garden. Presently the grass, leaves, and newspapers are decaying but we will add a bit of compost and seed some green beans, cukes, and zucchini in the next few days. Hopefully, it won't be too late. My friend told me today that she plans to sow some sweet corn yet. That will be wonderful for a fall garden. When my husband cut these old railroad ties, the creosote was so strong that his arms were burning that night and the whole next day. There are now patches of brown in the lawn where those strong chemicals that were meant to preserve the railroad ties came in contact with the grass and killed the lawn.

Great job done, my dear.
We had a family gathering in the shade after the heat of the day to celebrate all their hard work.
