Biology

I may have written this before, but I'll write it again. Amber loves Apologia Science. It's an easy and friendly science for any homeschooler. This year's biology is going great, EXCEPT for the putrid smells of yucky bacteria in these jars on the dining room table. Really, it's not that bad. Yes, it is. No, it's not. O.K. Depends who you ask!

A week ago Amber had gotten some pond water and then in individual jars added rice, egg yolk, soil, and hay and left it sit for a week.

All of them were stinky, but the egg yolk was the winner for the worst smell!

Yet with all this, it's amazing to see LIFE in things we would consider lifeless. There's an abundance of life, living and moving creatures in things we can't see except with the use of the microscope.

What a perfect and grand design of God! It was a neat reminder to Amber and all of us.

Zach's been on his binge of creating things. He came up with this star and pine cone design and is really proud of it. The triangle spins around, too.
We finished the day with a delicious supper of bean burritos topped with lettuce from the garden and fresh tomatoes. The green tomatoes we picked a month ago now ripened and they are fabulous.

The lettuce is on the south side of our garage and we had a really hard frost this morning so I went out and sprinkled the leaves with water. So far the lettuce is doing well without being covered.

We have a nice crop that could grow a bit taller for harvesting. I'm holding my breath. But we haven't had a really really hard frost until today. We've had frost, just not this hard. The south side is what saved the lettuce so far. One of these days, I may just lose the crop. It's was worth a try, though planting it so late. Tonight's supper was worth the effort!

There's just NOTHING like fresh garden produce from your own patch of dirt. It's been a very rewarding year after not having gardened for 3 years. The break was nice and I think that's why we enjoyed this year so much. I wasn't ready for summer to end.
