First thing he did was seed grass on the little plot behind the garage. This garden spot always had a lot of briars and poison and with the garden at another spot, this was the best plan. We'll still keep the irises and a few sedum and the garden tea patch. I think we'll like it.
Work started on the hill moving the farmer's pallets. Merv had a lot of willing helpers. There is nothing better for young boys than to be working alongside their Daddy. There's some things a mother just can't teach.
And though it's heavy to move and the sun's bright, that's no big deal if you're working with your Dad. This is a privilege not to be taken for granted. Too many children in today's world have a Daddy who's walked out on them. Or God had different plans for their life and chose to take their loved one out of this world.
Far too many children have no clue what family life and working together is like. What a sad picture for America, for as the family, so the nation!
The ground was dry and the tilling was very hard. Notice where the tiller is setting to the left of the photo. That's a new garden patch. Merv was busy weedeating and tilling and making everything look nice.
We had many great laughs and a wonderful bonding time.
My goal was reached by finishing the job of planting the newly tilled shade garden. It had only one day to compose and set there fallow.
The youngest two were busy using the newly purchased watering cans. We have a 30 gallon water tank setting on blocks and we try to keep it filled so the water is warmed and handy to use.
This is the completed project along with lots of natural mulch.
This great big rock was in the newest garden patch and we needed the neighbor to get it out with his skidloader. Thanks J. He set the stone right here and that's where it stayed. We didn't move it at all.
I was happy to plant this little clematis, a gift from the friends we visited on Saturday.
I love the idea I saw in a magazine for the hen and chicks planted in an old chicken feeder. I still want to get a plant for the top.
The ducks used to be in my kitchen years ago when that was once the theme for my kitchen. That was before our first child was born.
The girls wore these little shoes when they were toddlers.
The grass was on clearance at Lowe's. At first I had planned to give my little boy hair - a later post on that. But I decided to plant it here instead.
The beets are thick and coming up nicely. I've read you can use the tender greens in salads. I like to snack on them while I work in the garden.
The onions look healthy and great with them freshly mulched.
Our potatoes got nipped with the last frost this morning. Mother's Day, isn't that the cut off date? They'll be fine as they can withstand a light frost. Thankfully the green beans weren't up too high. They were only starting to pop up and close enough to the ground to not get nipped.
This is our only clunker of a mower for all the lawn we have to mow. But with each one taking turns and doing a little at a time, it isn't too bad. It gives us lots of grass for mulching. The rubber on the back tire fell off, but it's still usuable. This is the first mower Merv and I purchased. And though it had several years of a slight sabatical, it works great. For some reason, the self propeller decided to kick in and work. It hadn't worked for two years. Strange.
This is the large pine on our neighbor's land under which we created the shade garden.
Here's the view of the gardens.
Merv, bless his heart keeps busy weedeating until it's time for him to leave.
Before - Our mailbox used to set across the road. Jr. was happy to remove the posts.
After - mailbox is now on our side. It was an excellent suggestion of our neighbor.
Lunch, a haircut, and we're off for the airport by 3:00 P.M.
The girls had piano so they went to their friend's house where they captured these lovely flowers and little girl.
